what are the pros and cons of Clipless Pedals for bikes?

and i have the eggbeaters, just not used to them yet (got them for christmas) and i go on dirt trails, and uphill/downhill roads

I've been using eggbeaters for years. Crank Brothers really got it right with that design.

The major pros are that you get more efficient energy transfer since you can pull up on the pedals as well as push down. Since you're attached to the bike at four points, you have more control on rough terrain & jumps (feet won't slip off the pedals). The pedals are also lighter since you don't need all that material of a platform.

The only con is that when you're getting used to it you may not disengage fast enough and just fall over. That's why you may want to practice on grass (where the landings are softer) before going on trails or concrete.

Update: When you crash, you can get hurt. These pedals eject you if you wipe out. I've wiped out on trails & been hit by a car; my shoes came right out on impact & never caused problems.
