Can I wash leather seats?

I have a rail buggy that I drive on the ground in the mud. The seats leather are really muddy. I tried spraying them off with the hose and do not work too well. Is it permissible to throw them in the machine washing? I wash my leather shoes all the time and they do well, but I paid big money for these seat covers and do not want to lose them. If it is not in the washing machine, other suggestions would be great.

I would like to limit the exposure of water to expensive leather whenever possible. Maybe a damp cloth is good, but a pipe ... no way. At least use a protector like Lexol to revitalize and protect.
