Why is there always shoes left on the side of the road?

I know this is perhaps the strangest question ever but every time I drive on the highway, there are shoes that litter the roadside. I do not understand! And the other day someone left run only one shoe in the snow in my neighborhood. How do they do it? People throw old shoes out there car windows? Why? And I'm the only one who noticed that?
