Just switched from Mtn. Pedals to Road Pedals. Cant Clip in?

I've been riding Mtn pedals on my road bike for about a year and the other day I decided to take the plunge to Road Pedals. I love them when im moving the power transfers in noticably different. However coming out of stoplights im having major problems getting clipped in.

In my old mtn pedals I could start from stop and push down with my left foot and by the time the right pedal was at the top i was clipped in and ready for a smoth downstroke. Now I barely manage the one sided road pedal.

Are there any secrets or tips or am I just going to have to spend another couple months getting used to new pedals?(I wouldnt be so whiney about this if i didnt almost get hit by a car today when i couldnt get clipped in)

small allen head somewhere on the pedal
read the directions or look on the things

usually counterclockwise makes all that looser like you want
