How do I improve my cycling performance, I cycle an awards-winning classic road bike?

All my cycling buddies are dressed in cycling attire like professional cyclists (helmet, jersey, padded shorts, cleat/clipless shoes). I wear for training/competitions, helmets, long sleeves tee-shirts, bermuda/jogging shorts, jogging shoes)

Only manged to overtake them all during hill-climbing training. Many of them suggested that I wear clipless shoes to improve my cycling. One even suggested to wear padded cycling shorts

However, each time I won 1st or 2nd Runners-up I was wearing long sleeves Tee-shirt, jogging shorts, jogging shoes (never go up podium when I tried jersey and padded cycling shorts)
My butt hurts after cycling more than 10km with 1st padded cycling shorts. Thigh blistered after cycling more than 60km with 2nd padded cycling shorts.
Many/most people I spoke to fell because of clipless shoes trapped their landing legs, resulting in broken bones repeatedly. Personally withnessed many such falls

people falling because of clipless shoes? doesn't really happen that often in all honesty, ex specially once you have the hang of it. the falls you've witnessed are most likely due to poor adjustment on the Pedals and positioning of the cleat. you should be able to adjust the pedals to release easier on a good set of them. however, if you simply mustn't have clipless (but i really suggest trying them, improve my and many others performances - you won't see a pro riding without them), i suggest getting some cycling "touring" shoes. stiff like clipless but without the clickin in.
to solve you padded short problem, embrocate! use a brand like Brave Soldier and you'll understand. also, you can't really wear underwear in cycling shorts (another common mistake) and you need to make sure they really fit you.
also tho,in all honesty its only partly about what you are wearing. its mostly about proper form and having a good solid base. working as a bike messenger i wear Chrome's Shins (you might dig these) and a Rapha "fixed" t-shirt, both are technical but comfortable. tho on the weekends i do suit up in jersey and bib shorts to hit the road.
