Sore in the Saddle?

If you are having saddle pain and are constantly trying to find the perfect seat, stop spending a bunch of money on seats and look at these tips in conjunction with your saddle and solve your pain the easy way.

Is your seat height correct? As a professional fitter, I use many tools to determine the correct seat height, but as a quick at-home test you can do the following. Sit on the seat and try to put both feet on the ground; you should barely be able to touch the ground with your tippy toes. This is close to the correct seat height without a scientific measurement.

Is your seat tilt correct? Take a step back from your bike on a flat surface. How is the seat put on the bicycle? Is it level with the ground, tilted up or down? The difference between comfort and pain is often a degree either side of neutral.

How high do the handlebars need to be? Believe it or not, handlebar height has a lot to do with saddle comfort. Why? Just to keep it simple, it relates to flexibility. Proper handlebar height is often determined by the type of bike but can be modified if necessary. See the classifications below to find general guidelines for you and your bike.

Hybrid / Comfort / Cruiser Handlebars higher than seat height

FX Series (at Trek)/ Cross-bike (hybrid/road) / Mountain Bike Handlebars same height as seat

Road Handlebars, in general, lower than seat height

For most people who have never considered fit as the underlying cause of seat discomfort, no matter what you do to the seat; change it, soften it, or put a cover over it, it most likely you wont solve the problem.
