Legends of Wild Swans
LEGENDS of wild swans
The Wild Swans at Coole
WBYeats
The trees are in their beauty autumn
Forest roads are dry,
Under the October twilight the water
Mirrors a clear sky;
On overflowing water between stones
swans are nine and fifty.
...
But now they drift on the water again
Mysterious, beautiful;
Between what rushes will they build,
In this lake edge or pool
Delight men's eyes when I wake up one day
Find them flew? (Article Link).
A swan's stories is the best known tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the wild swans (article link below). In this paper, a widowed king was eleven son and a daughter, Elisa. He marries a wicked witch who does not like children, and turns the boys into swans flying away. The princess is looking for them, and how she cries so it creates a lake of tears. On the shore of the lake, she finds her brothers Swan, and fairy appeared in his dream Eliza tells the secret of their release, if it collects enough nettles to make shirts eleven years old when they wear shirts they be released from the magic. The girl collects nettles, and is located in a cave in the forest to her sewing. (It is clear that the cave in the forest and young men transformed into swans, transporting the girl and her brother to a place outside of realism, the civilized world in the field of nature and myth). Eliza is found by a young king who had been hunting, he falls in love with its beauty and draws him into his palace, his wife - and all nettles. During his stay in the palace, many jealous people tell stories about King's evil, calling her a witch, and in the end he is obliged to burn at the stake. Although Eliza continues, even in prison, sewing shirts of his brothers, they come to visit him in the form of a swan. Finally, when is removed and burned, they fly over it, she threw the shirts over them, and they return to their forms of Princess eleven, except the youngest whose shirt is not finished and it retains a wing instead of an arm - thus retaining a remnant of the natural world in civilization.
Similar stories appear in Grimm with some variations, although in a story of the girl was six brothers instead of eleven. In all these cases, the swans are men, the situation is reversed, however, in the Chaikovski beautiful music for the ballet Swan Lake (article link below). This story tells the story of a wicked witch, who had the swan princess Odette, all day, she flies with her daughter, swans, and only at night, she lands on the shore of a Lake and returns to its form as a woman. (The lake, incidentally, has been formed by the tears of the mother handed over the fate of his daughter, we have here a double figure mother / daughter of a goddess of water). The story says that only if a young virgin man swear eternal faith of his love and wife, she will be freed from the magic, but if the prince betrays his oath, she dies. Prince Siegfried falls in history so in love with the princess Swan, but the sorcerer drew her to betray her by making him show his love to the darkness, artificial Figure Odile had himself created. Odile, actually, beside it the opposite color, is the splitting image of Odette (here is a double image white / black, light / dark or good / bad). After the betrayal is discovered, Odette is preparing to die, but the Prince arrives and tries to save her. His love of his release of magic, but they and drown in the lake.
Details shared by both stories turn humans into swans by witchcraft, hunting the king / prince, and the lake of tears created by a woman. The main differences between the two are the sex of the bewitcher and humans turn into swans. It should be noted that both Eliza and Siegfried are names derived from Germanic mythology, the lake created by the tears of a woman made her a goddess of water. Presumably, therefore, that two fairy tales are based on European mythology much earlier in connection with the swans. To understand the basic meaning, then it may be interesting turning to these ancient myths.
It seems that many similar stories are common throughout the continent, where the swans appear. These tales are known Sweden, Germany, Romania and others (like this one where the swans are replaced by harp seals, bears or other animals), in some cases pay their outer skin and take human form, it is significant that in some of these stories, as in Andersen and Chaikobski, these people are bewitched, but in others they do so voluntarily. In an online site called Swan Maiden (article link below), a hunter found a swan or a group of swans flying over the shore of a lake, they lose their coats of feathers, into young men and girls go swimming. The hunter a hard coats and skins It is thus trapping its owner to come and be his wife. They lived together until she finds her coat and fled again. The end of stories in different ways, the tragedy in Happy Ever After.
It is highly significant that all these stories involve women as swans, and not men. But an old Irish tales, it tells a different way (Art. link below). Angus son of Dagda fell in love with a Swan-girl who appeared in his dream. Subsequently, he met a group of 150 swans, flying in pairs, which are tied together with a silver chain, but her daughter wears a crown and a gold chain. When Angus calls this particular swan, she leaves group, transforms into a swan and they flew together, tied with a golden chair. It is obvious here that the girl has her own swan to change at will, and is bound by a male witch, which is more - it has the power to change into a swan and her lover, making her a goddess Swan true. This is an index to the initial function of the swan in European mythology.

It seems that in the Hindu tradition-European there are a number of goddesses Swan. Some of these goddesses were associated with death, and with other qualities of the Underworld (where are dead), and the wisdom and prophecy. Robert Graves set the swan as a bird of Death, and the three Greek figures of Graie, or Gray Ones, show clearly this idea: they were described as "fair-faced and swan. They had gray hair from birth and shared one eye and a tooth, according to Graves, they used for prophecy. Their genealogy back to the early descendants of the Earth and Sea, and their names have been separated Enyo ("horror"), Deino ("Dread"), and Pemphredo ("Alarm").
A Celtic goddess Brigit Swan, who this bird was sacred, and was Underworld support qualities of wisdom and crafts. In Hindu mythology, the swan was sacred to Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and learning, who was seated on a throne of two swans.
Other deities are connected with the swan by her beauty shines white. These figures are Greek and Roman Venus Aphrodite, in which the swan was sacred. But another symbol of beauty, much more complicated these goddesses Love, in this respect, much further. This is Helen, who was the daughter of Leda and the Swan - or, in another interpretation, as Leda a swan, after all, she was the one who laid Swan egg, two pairs of twins lit: Helen and Clytemnestra, Castor and Pollux (known as Pollux) - Castor and Pollux (twins) who "embodied the two halves of the year."
The multiplicity of the image of the swan - Death, wisdom, motherhood, beauty and love -
is well represented in the figure of Helen, and is connected to another trait of this bird. The swan is a migratory bird, as This is well expressed in the poem of two Yates and Lemke's painting. It is regarded not only in autumn and the death of the year - hence its link with death, but also in spring, linking the idea of rebirth. It is therefore a symbol of the Great Goddess of nature that was in charge of the year death and resurrection.
A site called goddesses and priestesses Connected with Hera (article link below), the name of Helen means "bright one, light, sun, fair," he refers to her as a goddess of the harvest, when the sun is at its maximum (in the Mediterranean region). Another title Dendritus Helen - she tree, "referring to her as a goddess of fertility care fruit trees; tree was her birthday celebrated every year on the island of Platanista, where it was venerated until cent at the end of the 19th .. In another title, Rhigidenes, which means "strength," Helen has been responsible for death in various forms, including death orgasmic penis. This combination of features suggests that it may have started as a goddess Astarte or pillar as Aphrodite, loved to dance ecstatic and sexual rites.
This idea is the basis of the theory of the swan is a symbol of the year die in the fall, which comes after Saint-Jean, the peak of the sun and time of harvest, to revive again in spring. The Dioscuri, Swan was born, were the kings of the two halves of the year Each year the death and resurrection. Their mother, then either Leda or its embodiment as Helen, was actually the Great Mother Goddess, in charge life and death, symbolized by the swan, appearing regularly in spring and autumn. Graves connects this myth in his book The Greek myths with the idea that "In the middle of summer, they (The Swans) flew north to breeding unknown, supposedly to take the soul of the deceased king with them. "
Swan also appears Laima, a Lithuanian Mother Goddess (who is also represented as a goddess of fate, determine the duration of life and of course the death of human beings), who was in charge of "blessing, unity, destiny, love, luck and" magic, according to the site by name. Its symbol is said to be a crown, and his totem is the swan. As a mother, we can note that the Hindu god Brahma from an egg swan. The swan was also sacred to Christians Mary, Mother of Jesus. males could become swans that by his grace, either when it grants them his love as a girl, or when it takes their souls away in death. Death goddesses, were the Valkyries, who flew in the shape of swans Gazing into the battlefield for dead warriors bravely to take their souls as a reward in paradise of Valhalla.
However, Death goddesses ancient myths transformed into wicked witches of fairy tales. Thus, it was the goddess herself in the fairy tale which, like the witch queen boys turned into swans, and the girl went back into humans, the young fairy in the story is another aspect of the princess herself. Such equation of the old witch = Young Maiden appears in Chaucer's poem The Knight's Tale.
The swan, then, is one manifestation the goddess as a young girl, mother, crone and death, which causes her boys accused of being born, growing at a handsome young hunter, making love, death and descend into hell, and finally back to life and begin the cycle again, as a symbol of the constantly changing and moving year. But the power of this goddess has been removed with the changes in social structure by a "wicked witch", which was set load it and everything on earth, to destroy at will, as can be seen in a ballet Chaikovski's beautiful.
