How Gears Work MTB

The gear bike just keep getting more and more complex. The bikes of today have less than 27 gears. A mountain bike use a mix of three different sized sprockets in front and nine in the back to produce gear ratios.

The idea behind these devices is to allow the driver to crank the Pedals at a steady rate, regardless of the type of slope the bike is running. You can better understand this by imagining a motorcycle with just a single gear. Every time you turn the pedals one turn, the rear wheel make a turn as well (compared Speed 1:1).

If the rear wheel is 26 inches in diameter, then with 1:1, a full twist on the pedals would result in the wheel covering 81.6 inches. If you are pedaling at a speed of 50 rpm, which means that the bike can cover over 340 feet of ground per minute. Only of 3.8 km / h, which is the equivalent of walking speed. This is ideal for climbing a steep hill, but bad for the earth or downhill.

To go faster you need a different ratio. To drive at 25 km / h downhill with a cadence 50 rpm at the pedals, you'll need a gear ratio 5,6:1. A bike with a lot of gear will give you a large number of increments between a gear ratio 1:1 and 6,5:1 gear ratio so you can always pedal at 50 rpm, no matter how fast you actually happening.

On a mountain bike 27 speed normal, six gear ratios are so close together that you can not notice any difference between them.

With actual use, cyclists tend to select a gear adapted to the slope they are riding on and stick to it, although the front sprocket may be difficult to pass under a heavy load. It is much easier to shit between the gears in the rear.

If you start a hill, it is preferable to choose the smallest sprocket on the front of the gap between the nine gears available on the back. The speeds of more than you have on the rear sprocket, the biggest advantage you get.

Overall, the gears are very important for mountain bikes where they dictate your overall speed. Without gears you would not be able to build speed, or you be able to book pedals. The gears will move the pedals and help you gain speed.
